About This Pattern

The granny square blanket is the quintessential crochet project — endlessly satisfying to make and beautiful in every home. This version pairs warm terracotta with soft cream for a palette that works in any room. Each square is worked individually and then joined using the slip-stitch flat join method, which keeps the seams invisible.

This is the ideal first blanket project. You'll master the classic granny square, learn to change colours within a round, and practice the join-as-you-go technique.

Gauge & Finished Size

Make a test square before starting. Your square should measure 6 × 6 inches after blocking.

  • Blanket size: 50 × 60 inches (approx.)
  • Number of squares: 80 squares (8 × 10 grid)

Making the Granny Square

Each square is worked in 4 rounds. You'll make 40 squares in Terracotta and 40 in Cream.

Round 1 — Centre Ring

  1. Make a magic ring (or ch 4, join with sl st to form a ring).
  2. Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc into ring, ch 2.
  3. *Work 3 dc into ring, ch 2; rep from * 2 more times.
  4. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. (4 clusters, 4 ch-2 corner spaces)
  5. Fasten off Terracotta, join Cream.

Round 2 — First Border Round

  1. Join yarn to any ch-2 corner sp.
  2. Ch 3, work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into same sp — first corner made.
  3. *Ch 1, skip 3-dc cluster; work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into next corner sp; rep from * around.
  4. Ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch 3.
  5. Fasten off Cream, join Terracotta.

Round 3 — Second Border Round

  1. Join yarn to any corner ch-2 sp.
  2. Ch 3, work (2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into same corner sp.
  3. *Ch 1, work 3 dc into ch-1 sp; ch 1, work (3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) into corner sp; rep from * around.
  4. Join with sl st. Fasten off.

Round 4 — Edging Round

Work one round of sc evenly around the entire square, working 3 sc into each corner ch-2 sp. Join with sl st. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Joining the Squares

Arrange squares in an 8 × 10 grid, alternating colours in a checkerboard pattern.

Flat slip stitch join (right sides facing):

  1. Hold two squares RS together, matching corners.
  2. Working through both back loops, sl st along one edge.
  3. Fasten off. Repeat for all horizontal seams, then all vertical seams.

Border

Once all squares are joined, work 3 rounds of sc around the entire blanket in Cream, working 3 sc into each corner. This gives the blanket a clean, crisp edge.

Fasten off, weave in all remaining ends. Block lightly with a damp cloth.
